New Member Returning To The Hobby

hi! My sister and I collected as kids/teens, way back in the 60s/70s. We actually acquired some interesting material at that time, especially given our relatively younger ages - US mostly, with a lot of back-of-the-book and oddity stuff. We have a lot of the experimental tagging material, airmail booklets, potato tax stamps (which a quick peek suggests they might be actually worth money, lol, who knew at the time?), etc.

For work and kid reasons we put away the albums, dusting them off now in retirement. Quite a change from back then, when you used to use the hardcopy scott's catalogue, bid on auctions by mail, sent for stamps on approval from HE harris, etc.

Looking forward to re-acquainting ourselves with the "state of the industry" (which to some degree seems to have declined, sadly), and then we'll decide how to move forward.

Nice to find a forum like this which actually seems active. So many forums (of various interests) were started in the burst of internet activity and are dead now.

And I must say one thing - I still use a hardcopy catalog, more than just one!

Yes millervt, glad you found your way back to the hobby. We all did similar throughout the years. And I too still depend on hard copies. Just like the items we collect, still nice to literally have in hand. Enjoy.

The hobby is alive and thriving but certainly has changed with online growth replacing some of the older, traditional aspects.

Enjoy having fun with stamps! That is the name of this game.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Its been so long we've almost forgotten everything we knew, so its pretty much like starting again. Just quickly paged through albums and found pages including items like the IPSA stamps, boy did that come and go. But fun stuff to collect.

sadly no inverted jennys or graf zeppelins to be found...
