Designing and laying out motherboards was some of what we used to do at my company; keep in mind that the motherboard pictured probably has at least 8 layers. In other words, the traces you see on the surface (connecting the surface components) are also on the other layers in the printed circuit board (PCB). If the PCB did not have 7 other layers, it would be 7 times the size you see.

Designing these, building prototypes, testing the prototypes to make everything work (in conjunction with all the firmware) was a big part of the product development cycle of building the new devices we manufactured. We typically targeted 4-6 weeks for just the PCB development part of the project, which explains why we burned out often.

Thank you Don, this has been very illuminating!

I knew that my EHDs were getting slower as they passed the 50% threshold. I only keep the essentials on there now. The rest is backed up to disc.

Fabulous advice, thank you both
I feel more confident now, and will purchase a card next time in the city.

I usually back up every 6 months,
a 2 hour time was OK, I can handle that
I have never been confident of Back up software.

What knowledgeable people!

Note that you will want a USB card that supports PCI-E X1 slot (those two little slots on your motherboard shown below

Cannot believe I did it, all on my own Thanks to SCF !
Purchased Via VL805 Expansion card ($18)
Installed it into slot in Win 7 tower (Had to bend the steel tab to get the screw in,
and the card slotted snugly)

Travelled all over the internet, and finally found a driver (no instructions came with the card)

Transferred 120Mb in 60 seconds, unaware if that is good or bad?
(613 files in 60 seconds)

But it will cut my 80Gb backup down to 1.5 hrs, rather than 2.5hrs.

USB file transfer speeds can vary greatly depending upon the files themselves. For example, transferring a single 120MB file will go much quicker than transferring 120 individual 1MB files.

When you read information (marketing hype) about USB transfer speeds they are using optimized file sizes and you normally will not see those kinds of idealized speeds in everyday use.

I would also make sure that you have a good quality USB cable and are not using some crusty 6 year old cable.

But your practical 'real life' test using a group of files that you actually backup tells you that you have made a good upgrade!
