Parcelpostguy: If the seller/sender files a claim with the USPS, will that show up in the tracking information? Once the claim is paid, if the package is found, does the USPS keep the package, since the contents have been "paid off" (similar to a car being totaled by the insurance company where they pay your claim, but they keep the totaled car)

Torin, here is my January 14, 2023 response:

I have no memory of having to make any claim for indemnity upon any item sent in any manner having insurance coverage. I have suffered no losses. I have however received uncounted refunds for the postage associated with late delivery Express Mail.

Torin, here is my January 16, 2023 response:

In addition to what I wrote above, I have received a full refund for a package mailed 11-15-2022, dropped in a muddy puddle, placed wet into a plastic USPS body bag, received at my PO on 11-19-2022 but not provided to me until 12-2-2023 even after multiple visits to pick up my POB mail. Photographed the package in plastic (postmarked on day of personal delivery) and then without the plastic to show discoloration from mud, mold [that started the cheese comments in this thread] and other damage. Emailed the ebay seller, on our email, not ebay's, who made a claim under the USPS insurance of up to $200 for the priority box. {Note, I made the claim directly with the seller, not via ebay messaging.} Seller filed claim with the USPS and after about one month, received insurance coverage payout of $197 and change. On 1-15-2023 seller refunded me for the entire order via ebay. So, I have the box and contents in my possession. Seller was made whole for the sales loss and I was made whole by the seller.

Now as to tracking, much is stored in the system, but only certain information is shown to the public on a tracking log. In my case, the "arrived visibly damaged" did not show either when noted upon arrival at the PO on 11-19-2022 nor upon actually personal delivery to me on 12-2-2022. The type of damage cannot be entered into the tracking, in this case, water. Nor will tracking show the claim process and payout to the public tracking summary. I will added I watched and read the text massages entered on the tracking hand held scanner at my PO.

The reason I did not make the claim via the ebay messaging and claim system was so I did not cause a time pressure deadline on the seller. I knew the seller would make good especially due to a outside of ebay and philately friendship we have developed over the years.

Did that cover it?
