Certainly not common, Thomas, although on the other hand, SG O82a is greatly overpriced in Gibbons. (I'd say £6 used would be about right.) |

Thomas, I know just how you feel about filling holes. I have some holes - relatively cheap stamps - for Cochin that seem strangely hard to fill. I particularly like your SG O19b. I've been hunting for one for a while; I have a nice block and a single of the First Raja 1½ Rupee, but I just don't seem to come across the Second Raja stamp.
The Third Raja 10 Anna used is also a difficult stamp. I only picked up my first copy in the last few days too. As it must have been used almost exclusively on parcels, finding copies with really nice clean (and genuine!) cancellations is a challenge.
Now if I could only find a nice, genuine SG 92c at the right price (say $5, or even $10) ... |

Come to think of it... - possible to send you a sheet of 92c - only thing is that some serious work is involved in scanning and fitting them perfectly - - with the perfs to be aligned properly and so on - and then some unlisted / unknown variation can be embedded into it so that those who have time can pore over it for a generation and come to a conclusive conclusion after much debate which may or may not be that the thing was a fake ! |

Hi Tony, If you are so desirous, I think I could provide you a III Rajah 10 annas used copy . Also I feel your 6 annas 8 pies stamp requires a replacement as it is a pentagon shaped one - top right corner gone! Thomas Paul |

good lot Thomas...not elusive items but atleast got the gaps filled in your collection. seems O19b has toned gum and resembles a pair in my collection which I purchased from a Trichur based dealer some time back I remember he was having a full sheet which was given to a computer centre for scanning the image and eventually broken due to mishandling;else it would have been a unique sheet in existence. till then e was selling this in pairs, blocks and singles |

Something to bear in mind with this problem of gum toning is that the gum arabic used, being a natural product, could vary in colour from batch to batch. I believe that some of the early London printings of the George VI colonial stamps had quite brownish gum, and that in fact, the gum is one of the distinctive features of these particular printings. So one shouldn't automatically downgrade a Perkins, Bacon-printed stamp for toned-looking gum. Of course, if the paper is toned as well ... |

Another variety is shown here. V Rajah 9 pies. The lower part of the perforation on both sides is like serrated one. This may be because of overlapping of perforation needles from top and also from bottom resulting in double perforation in same line . |

Thomas, the perforations are a bit hard to see. It would help if you could provide a larger scan.
If this is SG 98ab, the perf 13x13½ type, the double perforations could easily occur due to a double strike of the comb perforator. It would be less likely on SG 98a (the perf 13) because it was line perforated. |

Those ON C C S overprint errors aren't so common. I'm still looking for one on the later surcharges. The flat back on 'G' also seems to be uncommon.
SG O82 seems to have been a real problem for the printers, since it also has an overprint both sides, and an overprint both sides, double and inverted on the back. It must have been a new worker who did that job!
John Trowbridge wrote a series of articles in India Post on plating the Puttan types. I'm sure he would have identified the cliche your example is from. |
