Pushing 330,000 All Different Worldwide Stamps In One Collection .

Looks like at the Aldrich auction the big collection went for 5 to 6 cents a stamp give or take. just eyeballed it.

Wait a minute Green Dragon ! ---- Let me translate that results for that "big collection " at Aldrich .

First from the pictures that looks like stamps on stock sheets NOT IN ALBUMS so to call it a collection is pushing it .

Second I don't know the stamps are in any kind of order , 146,000 stamps willy -nilly on stock sheets would be a " bit**" to sort .

Third did they say mildew .....how about Mold ! Keep that away from my stamps ,matter in fact keep it out of my house . It is no fun to be around that in Florida .

Fourth , Lot of stamps mis identified , every thing over $20.00 may be mis I.D.ed

Fifth , the mint stamps have stuck down problems ,yea that is fun to deal with .

Six , "some stamps have issues" ,yea like defects

other than that I think it is a risk at 6 cents per stamp purchase .

floortrader did not say I would buy it. Yes, I picked up on the mold and stuck down which is why I dismissed it as well. Still it got 6 cents a stamp

anytime you see a collection like that you still have to take notice. That and the accumulation lot at DH. Wow that went for a lot.

You are all way ahead of me in the WW. When I look at these bulk lots or even scott Internationals. These all look like mostly cheap stamps. Would it not be more cost effect to buy bulk off-paper and then not have to deal with the shipping cost. The only advantage of the bulk auctions are that you get the albums and they are somewhat sorted. But the stamps look the same as I would get in a high quality WW of paper.

I was trying to explain or show how I read those stamp auction firms descriptions .

I also have a seventh issue and I seen this before on other lots .

The problem is these huge catalog values put on them . Owner says catalog value of $330,000 ,then the auction house comes up with $275,000 .....that is for 146,000 stamps ? Can you explain to me a average catalog value of $2.00 per stamp ? Most stamps in that lot catalog at 25 cents ,how do you get a $2.00 average . Somebody bought a lot of high price stamps or somebody doesn't understand math .

The primary responsibility of an auction house is to realize as much as possible for its consignors and that gets the auction house the best commission at the same time. In order to do that with material that is less than perfect, sometimes much less, is to describe it in a such a way that it piques bidders' interest, suggests possibilities that spark the imagination and yet still protects them from claims of problems not described. The T&Cs are the real guardrails of the sale, but you have to be careful not to create a condition that opens a dispute or runs counter to those contractual protections. And realize that the contractual protections are definitely in the House's favor.

So, if a lot "smells" you have to suggest or point to something that counterbalances that negative. "The lot comes from a smoker's home that owned twenty cats BUT we spotted a complete set of Columbians to the dollar value." OR "Some duplication but every Region well represented".

One of my favorites is "catalog value not inflated by faulty high value classics". So that is a good thing?

Rodcam very funny how you describe auction house language and spot on. Yes, it is an art how they describe the lots and the balancing act that they play in order to describe accurately.

I broke Lot 1430 down into 14 ebay lots and lots of blank pages. This lot cost $425 plus commission and pro-rated shipping approximately $500.

When the dust settled I sold the 14 items for $1130, which is a very satisfactory result. I hope I do as well with the other 5 lots.

As a bonus a SCF member contacted me and needs some of the blank pages, I'd much prefer giving the pages to someone rather than just tossing them.

I'll report when I finish selling the next album.

Dianne Earl ----Let me second what Green Dragon said about the Southworth business paper ,thanks for the tip . We have it here by special order at Staples . Higher quality 24 lb paper plus it is better than the 20 lb paper I was using ,cost is higher but worth the difference.
