Pushing 330,000 All Different Worldwide Stamps In One Collection .

Ken R. -- Congratulations on making a good auction purchase , now I understand the good offers I missed out on ,but happy with what I picked up . There was 27 lots from that collection with prices realized all over the place ,wonder if intact they knew it wouldn't not of draw as high of a price.

The above scan of the GABON pages is a good example of why I gave up on the Scott International pages . The editors at Scott ended up with a mess of incomplete sets with the high values not having a place to exhibit the whole set complete . Plus sometimes the set is scatted over 2 or more pages . Then other pages having space for just one stamp .

What they needed was a "repair kit " a bunch of pages that could be purchased to better organize those who wanted a better feel to their country order .

I think Scott failure to correct this situation left the door open for someone to walk in and offer a better product {Steiner pages }.

Sort of feel those managers at Scott just milked the work of previous managers and wouldn't listen to their customers .

Sometimes album manufacturers have to accept that you can't get all the stamps from a set in a page and distribute them accordingly. This thread includes Gabon on MOC pages.

You should remember that the page plates were prepared in the era before computerized typesetting, so modifying page plates and storing them was far more difficult than today. Steiner had the advantage of beginning in the "desktop publishing" age and not having Scott's commitment to old metal plates or hard paper paste up.

Although, by the same token, someone setting the Scott pages by hand should have had more of an eye for design and layout.

Don't blame the worker bees but rather the chief editor or more likely the CFO (don't know what they were called back in the day).

Also, true that the original Scott pages were created as the stamps were issued and as with the catalog numbers it could become difficult to "unscrew" it all as new stamps in a series were issued over the course of many years. What to do when rearranging things would tick off existing owners that would have to deal with new page layouts and their disruption to the status quo.

This isn't really a fair knock on the International. Everyone who picked the International knew that going in. Scott had other products for people who wanted somewhat-more-complete pages.

I suspect this means that certain stamps are very difficult to find since all of the internationals were missing the same stamps and won't show up in collections unless added elsewhere on the page or on separate pages.

Sure, some stamps are fiendishly difficult, and therefore left out, but the editorial policy was to delete many high values of many hundreds (thousands?) of sets, theoretically making it easier for the intermediate collector to make progress.

Thanks for those links and additional information ,gives us a better historical understanding of Scott 's various albums . With the additional comments here ,gives us all a better understand of how each worldwide collector determines how they want their own collection mounted on album pages .

It really shows how we are all different but at the same time face the same issues when mounting our collections and what we do with it . Learned a lot
