Scott has a new catalog out now as referenced in the topic title.

The problem of counterfeit United States stamps is at a crisis level as evidenced by the catalog description:

Quote:
How bad is the counterfeiting of modern United States forever stamps? Well, bad enough that Scott catalog editors made the move to publish a new book focused just on counterfeits.

The new 2023 Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Counterfeits is the essential reference work for collectors of United States counterfeit stamp issues. It is also the go-to reference for users of postage stamps who want to know the differences between authentic postage stamps and counterfeits of a given issue.

Postal counterfeits and nonpostal and revenue counterfeits are listed in separate sections.

Counterfeiting of United States forever stamps increased exponentially in 2021 with most new issues being faked. Scott catalog editors have noted within the Postage section of the Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps and Covers what stamp issues are known to exist as counterfeits and have placed that information in footnotes.

Because of the large number of new counterfeit forever stamps (more than 300 major Scott catalog numbers in the last year), Scott editors have decided to only list denominated and earlier counterfeits in the 2023 Scott U.S. Specialized catalog.

No forever or postcard-rate counterfeits are included in the 2023 U.S. Specialized catalog from the years 2007 to date.

The counterfeit forever stamps are included in this new catalog and also in the U.S. Specialized digital catalog.

If only denominated counterfeit issues were listed, this new print catalog would only be 17 pages long. With the explosion of forever counterfeit issues, it is 97 pages. And more counterfeits have already been reported as the catalog was heading to press.

To order the new book, which is item No. 23FAKE, or access the U.S. Specialized digital catalog, visit the Amos Advantage website.

As far as satire goes, I give this 8/10. If you'd waited to post this 4/1, it would have been more believable.

I am curious what catalog values look like for the recent "discoveries" and how they arrived at those values. Maybe I ought to start stockpiling rolls of Chinese Forever stamps.

Thanks for the heads up, but Amos Advantage notes "On BackOrder - No Estimated Rcv Date". The usual suspects don't appear to have it in stock at the moment, either. Is there a pallet of these sitting covered in snow on some loading dock somewhere?

Meanwhile, you might have seen this before, but the below ad was new to me as of earlier this week. Not unexpected. Start your counterfeits collection today????:

Does anyone have this catalog? Every time I have checked, all of the stamp supply dealers and Amos, Amazon, ebay, even WalMart say Out of Stock or Backordered. Did it ever get published? Is there a newer edition available or in the works, or are the counterfeits coming out faster than the catalogs can keep track of?

Prior to 2023, the counterfeits were listed in the US Specialized Catalogs, which is another reason to keep a 2021 or 2022 version on hand. 2022 has counterfeits, but the 2021 also has the regular issue identifier section which is now sold separately. Essays and Proofs got dropped around 2022 as well.

As to comments on pricing, it is more an inventory of what has been found. What I look forward to is the on cover pricing of them but it may take years for that pricing to be developed on the more recent material. I would expect high prices for mail matter which had to pass over the counter for mailing such as Registered, Insured, COD and Media Mail for example.

I don't understand how any meaningful values can be set given the copious and fluid nature of supply for these counterfeits. Really, nobody has any "quantity issued" records and these things can be created and dumped in the marketplace at will. Not to mention that every time they are created they likely have different physical characteristics. Not like counterfeiters are stressing over using the same tech specs for paper/ink/equipment etc.

I talked to someone who has a copy of this catalog. He said it is pretty poor and recommended that I wait a couple of editions before buying it.

Given the rate that stamps are being counterfeited (and coins, I've seen counterfeit Morgan dollars and silver eagles), seems like a herculean task to keep up.

I am keeping my 2020 Specialized for the reasons parcelpostguy listed. I am looking for an updated identifier of counterfeits because so many new ones have been introduced since 2020.

I am not concerned about pricing. As we've discussed before, it opens a hornet's nest and only encourages creating a market of collectors for these. I think catalog prices for unused modern counterfeits should be simply at face value, since the original retail purchase price is typically half face and modern mint material typically starts at 2x the purchase price. I agree that used and on-cover pricing will take some time to settle out.

Thanks alub. I'm interested to know if a 2024/2025 counterfeits catalog is in the works or if I should start looking for a 2022 Specialized to fill in my gaps of information.

It might be easier to have a one paragraph "catalog" that lists the stamps that have NOT been counterfeited.

Thanks Paddle! I was unable to access the forum for a long time. Don was assisting me right before he passed, and we never fixed it. Just happy to be able to access the forum again on my laptop and tablet. The phone was undoable. Don't know how people work from their phones.
