In 1870 Peru issued a 5˘ scarlet Locomotive and Arms stamp to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first railway in South America.

NSK is correct - the Peru stamp is the first commemorative stamp issued in the world.

The NSW 1888 issue is the first commemorative set issued in the world. Each stamp in the set was issued on a different day, from 9 July 1888 (1d) to 13 March 1889 (5/-).

Victoria Sc #1 issued January 3, 1850. The first stamp featured a quaint 'half length' representation of Queen Victoria by local artist E. Wilson and was printed in Melbourne.

Tasmania's first stamp, Scott #1, was issued on 1 November 1853 in the name of Van Diemen's Land. The name changed to Tasmania with the 1858 Sc14.

Western Australia Sc 1/SG 1 issued 1 August 1854. The fourth Australian State to issue stamps started with the magnificent black swan. Printed by Perkins, Bacon & Co., London, England
