ebay and hipstamp give some idea of what's currently happening (keeping in mind that unless you search for "sold" listings, you're only seeing what someone is asking, which might have little bearing on reality). Nevertheless...

If you go to hipstamp and search for "Newfoundland 49" you'll get dozens of listings, from a couple dollars to hundreds of dollars. You'll see that there are some pretty inexpensive stamps that, to be honest, have more eye appeal than the example posted above. And, some have less.

If the book you found is Scott or Unitrade, take a bit of time and read the introduction section. Either one is well worth your time.

Hi Redlee,

You mentioned that you live close to Edmonton.

Edmonton has an excellent stamp club. It meets at 10830-109th Street on the 1st and 3rd monday evening of each month (6th and 20th March). Taking a few of your binders to one of these meetings will provide you with some good feedback information.

Google "Edmonton Stamp Club" for the website and all information.

There is also a Stamp Show and Exhibition this month, which has 16 national dealers should you be interested in selling.

Redlee: Pretty much all Canadian mint stamps post-1950 are best used as postage. You can do better with some sheets, plate blocks and some high values. But generally modern mint stamps sell for less than face in large quantities. Pre 1950 you can do better. But most 1940s mint have a limited audience, especially if hinge, no gum etc. The real value is in pre-1940 issues and even then you need to have good stuff to get much interest.

Your 1908 5 cent and 7 cent stamps are worth selling. Same true for the Victoria maple leaf high values, the Jubilee 2 and 5 cent and the 10 cent small queen. These are all like $2-$10 stamps. The rest, sadly, are not worth much. Many are out there in immense quantities. You may be best off trying to sell them at a garage sale or on ebay as a bulk lot.

I am curious as to what you have for arch/leaf material. Currently concentrating on #169.
