Windows 10 only
New 500Gb SSD External drive is formatted as exFAT
Would members recommend changing to NTFS
Just a backup drive using "copy" route

Thank you for your advice.

Approx (In the main) 500,000 files at say 80Kb to 900Kb

Possibly 500 files at 70Mb or larger

NTFS all-around better format. Better performance, less susceptible to data corruption.

Agree that NTFS is a better choice, faster file transfer spend and throughput. Also tends to be more stable.

Thanks,
After reading all the pros and cons on Google,
I wondered why Samsung would have exFAT as their default option.

Only downside I could see is that NTFS was slower with small files like mine.

I value stability over speed.

I think the reason exFAT is default is because it can be used by Windows, Mac, Linux etc out of the box. NTFS is for Windows only unless you install extra software.
