I just noticed this on ebay, sorry for the borrowed and enlarged scan. It is the cancel that is important here. I really like the shape of it and was wondering what it was called, or if there is a 'proper' name for it.

French or English or whichever will be just fine.

I call it, off the top of my head, a rosette cancel. Does that work? It kind of looks like a rose in bloom.

There is something like this cancel used in Belgium I believe that has two of these cancels overlapping one another that I like also but this seems the simpler and more striking to me.

I agree it's a nice shape Puzzler but I don't know what it's called either.

The postmark is a railway one for a route from somewhere to Limoges.

Ah, railway, then it fits with the French hexagon cancels I think. I rather like the Belgium railway hex cancels also.

Thank You.
That will help me in searching for more.

I agree Puzzler, France always had beautiful cancel hammers,
the very early 2 ring cds is my favourite.

Some of these florentine cancels can be valuable, some indicate
the pneumatic post.
There are French postmark identifiers on the internet.

Thanks Rod. Florentine it is. I'll take one of each.

And a French Vanilla ice cream with a saucy waitress.

Boy, have I missed you guys.

I usually see these referred to as "scallop" or "scalloped" cancels, though I've seen them described on ebay as "wavy" cancels. They are courrier conveyeur cancels, which for this purpose can be thought of as railway post office cancels. I can't explain the technical difference.

If they have the construction with an "a" between two destinations, they are a cancel for a particular route; they can also appear as just the station.

I have some interesting ones, including West Africa and Madagascar. I'll scan a few when I get a minute.

Collin

A slightly better scan than the first. I now have the stamp in my possession. Plus some other interesting cancels that need studying too.

Nice! The second scan really pops. That one would have caught my eye, too.

When you tire of it...
