Royal Mail have revealed their stamp schedule for 2023, with subjects to be celebrated on British stamps set to include Robin Hood, TV comedy classic Blackadder, Dame Shirley Bassey, King Charles' coronation, and more Harry Potter stamps. Whilst continuing to issue stamps featuring the Queen's silhouette in the corner, Royal Mail have revealed the stamps to be issued in 2023, though we are still uncertain when the King's portrait or cypher will appear on British stamps.
The subjects to be commemorated on stamps in 2023 present another eclectic mix of traditional and modern, pop culture rubbing shoulders with more prosaic aspects of British life. The full schedule is as follows:
12 Jan - Iron Maiden 16 Feb -X-Men 9 March - The Flying Scotsman 23 March - Flowers 13 Apr - The Legend of Robin Hood 6 May - His Majesty King Charles 111: A New Reign 17 May - Blackadder 8 June - Warhammer 22 June - Windrush:75 Years 13 July - River Wildlife 10 Aug -Terry Pratchett's Discworld 5 Sep - To be announced 21 Sep - Dame Shirley Bassey 19 Oct - Harry Potter 2 Nov - Christmas 2023

An eclectic mix utterly devoid of any sense of history. We must have had a million Harry Potter stamps, but not one of Defoe, Fielding, Sterne, Smollett, Gibbon … |

Iron Maiden Which one ? Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 Elizabeth 1st An extraordinary woman . Men Called her "Gloriana" The Princess Elizabeth, who then came to the throne in November 1558, was a very different person to her sister. Her life had been several times in great danger during Mary's reign, and the Spanish councillors had often urged Mary to put her to death. She was a woman of the most strangely varied character ; extraordinarily stingy and mean, extraordinarily brave and fierce (not cruel); passionately fond of her country, and English to the backbone; so jealous that she could not bear her courtiers to look at another woman ; so vain of her beauty that even in old age she covered herself with gorgeous dresses and ridiculous jewels ; by turns a scold, a flirt, a cheat and a heroine. But, somehow or other, she made her people follow, obey and worship her, till at last she became a sort of crowned spirit and guardian angel of the whole nation, which felt that it had grown to full manhood and power under her protecting care. My opinion. Quote: full manhood and power Largely influenced by her Father Henry Vlll, who had the wisdom, to build a vast Navy which protected that tiny Island for years ahead. |

Well, considering that the Iron Maidens were announced for January, and the promotional materials were color photos, I think we've established that any reference to EI is remote, at best. One degree of separation? |

Quote: Leather and spandex is in order. (business as usual for Geoff) Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just keep the glitter away from the albums. Can't get that @$!& out. |

Well, I wear a Belstaff jacket, but accompanied by 501s, not spandex, you'll be relieved to hear. Soul, blues, jazz, gospel for me - I have no interest in English pop music.
The "iron maiden" itself was a torture device. |

Out of curiosity, will Charles visage be on the Iron Maiden stamp in some fashion? Perhaps in the background as a roadie? |

Just as historical footnotes seeing as there is to be a stamp issue for King Charles:
Before Queen Anne died it had been proposed that her successor would be Sophia of Hanover (Princess Sophia of the Palatinate and Electress of Hanover). However, Sophie died a month or so before Anne so she never made it to the throne. Her son became heir on Sophie's death and became the first monarch of the Hanovarian line...George 1.
Continuing the Germanic theme of the British monarchs...Charles's father, the Duke of Edinburgh, was born Philippos Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and was really miffed at not being able to give his surname to his children having been over-ruled by his wife and her advisors who proposed they keep their mother's surname of Windsor (which had been changed from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha during the First World War due to it being too German). |

Being a big fan of Sir Tony Robinson (he played Baldrick in the various iterations of Blackadder) it's nice to see him depicted on some of these stamps. Over the past few years he's done a number of fascinating TV series on historical subjects, mainly about Great Britain. |
