Hi, I bought a used Scott International Volume 5 but upon going through it cleaning it up a bit (sideways mounts, seriously??), I noticed some pages were ripped out between Spanish Sahara and Sudan, and I can't find a country list online anywhere. I'm guessing this was Straits Settlements? I'd like to find some sheets on ebay to replace them with, if I don't give up altogether and just buy a new set of albums...

I believe this album is what's sold as 5A today because the album runs from 1960-1963 while I think I have today's 5B housed in a Volume VI album... I know less about these than I thought.

Any help is appreciated; thanks in advance!

If it covers 1960-63, it can't be Straits Settlements, as that was no longer a stamp-issuing entity by then. Maybe earlier than you think?

I wondered about that, because I checked the Scott Catalogue and Straits Settlements ends at 1948. However, I have a used Volume 4 and it has pages for Straits from 1957-1959, with each of the settlements getting its own page even though the stamps don't say Straits Settlements.

There's a listing on eBay right now for Straits pages somehow going to 1975, so maybe I'll buy those and go from there..

How bizarre to use an entity that no linger existed. If they were grouping the individual areas, it should have been as "Malaysia".

It cannot be Straits ending in 1948
Cannot be Malaysia, formed in 1963

Possible to have a scan / image of the page?

These are some of the pages out of my "Volume 4" (whatever it actually is)

And likewise for Kelantan, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, and Trengganu.

(and no, those mounts aren't my doing )

Scott in "arse" and "elbow" confusion. I seem to recall they once had spaces for the stamps of the "Allied Military Government" in France, an institution that never existed. You've solved your conundrum though!

Thanks Coinsearcher
Solved.
Could have been an error at the printer

Gives grumpy sad men, another item to poke sticks at Scott.

A less harmful practice than choosing gratuitously to insult others, nonetheless.

Update: The Straits Settlements pages I bought on eBay only go through 1959, not 1975 as stated. Likely an unfortunate typo, as the last page ended at 1957. Guess I have spare sheets to practice mounting and/or hinging methods on.

On the bright side, I've deconstructed my first Scott International binder. It looks like 3 pages were ripped out between Spanish Sahara and Sudan. The mystery continues...

If your album covers 1972 and later, between Sp and Su is Sr of Sri Lanka, the former Ceylon.

Possibilities:

Spanish West Africa if not included in Spanish Sahara.
Spassk, but maybe with Russia.
Stampalia, but maybe with Greece.
Stellaland, but maybe with Botswana

The Scott International Part V which covers from 1960-1963 does not have any countries between Spanish Sahara and Sudan. Although the Part VA which covers from 1964-1965 might include a new or changed country. Unfortunately I don't have the Part VA pages. There is another version of Part V which was released before they broke up the currently offered pages into Part V and Part VA. That version had stamps from 1960-1965. An issue with that version is that it exceeds the capacity of the large International binders once stamps/interleaves are added to the album. My current Part V (1960-1963) pages with interleaving has become a major pain to insert into its Scott slipcase.

Scotts is all over the place with this area. There is also a historical British overlap of Malaya & Straits Settlements areas, I forget which. This includes references to the related islands/areas. Throw in Singapore & North Borneo etal to get a fragmented view of the area. The Scotts albums and I believe the catalogs have confused the matter, especially as the tried to tie together the International volumes. Then try to tie together key provinces through their Malaya (Straits) and Malaysia existence. You can resort your pages several times as you get your head straight..
