i bought a large revenue collection 50 years ago with many better world revenues and these were among them. I haven't found out about them anywhere so I assume they may be rare. anyone with knowledge of these.

Appears you have a few examples of the "rare" inverted Venezuela telegraph issues.

On a more serious note, are you familiar with the Forbin catalogue of world-wide revenues? Which can be accessed via a Google search.

Several telegraphs and then the top right stamp, an Escuelas revenue, which looks to be from 1870. If so, it would be the fifth value of fifteen and one of the lowest catalogue values in the set (as of 100 years ago).

As someone once coined a derogatory phrase here on SCF

You need a "Catalogue Queen"

So here you are

Bib : Carlos Romero 2021

Strangely, not listed in Hiscocks or Donald Byrum

Not to pollute this thread with more extraneous fluff from the catalogues, but I went looking in Yvert for the telegraphs, since Rod mentioned that they weren't in Byrum or Hiscocks, and, they were there, but our top right Escuelas stamp was also there.

For the telegraphs, Yvert lists them as 1897. The basic issues match up with Romero. Yvert values them a bit lower and values the first four the same when used, with a 3x premium for #5 2b blue and a 6x premium for #6 3b rose.

For the Escuelas, though, they fall under the Fiscaux-Postaux listings. It appears to say that they could be valid for service in the interior of Venezuela.

There are one or two more-or-less horizontal bands of tiny printing across most of the stamps. This is visible on one of rod's stamps - second row right (5th) stamp. If I'm reading the catalogue right, that would be 1879 and the band would say "Decreto de 27 de Junio 1870" (Decreto translating as Decree; this might explain Forbin listing them as 1870.)

The 1880 issue lacks the "microprinting" band, which may make the OP's top right stamp Yv F-P 23, 1880. If so, it should perf 11.5.

Yvert says that pen cancels are the usual state for valuing used stamps and actual postal cancels are generally quite rare.

For quick identification, the 1871 issues appear to be ovals[*] with the value spelled out in the oval frame (that conclusion being based on only one value being pictured), while 1879 and following have numbers in the lower corners of the design.

I have no idea if the Escuelas were faked for the packet trade, but the tiny images in Yvert look to show stamps produced at a higher production value than the value in the OP image? I think I have some of these somewhere, but it will take some effort to find them.

[Source: Yvert Classiques (2020)]

ETA: * To clarify, the stamps are vertically-oriented rectangles, as you'd expect. The design is an oval frame.

Extraordinary info CJD, saved.
Is Yvert in English? If so I would be tempted, I have a strong collection of Venezuela, excepting the Series Sets, which I would love to have.

Cjd,
Carlos Romero has these as also Perf 11

I am having trouble with the difference with 1879 v 1880
On the 5c, the "mouth" of the "5" in 5c is Open on the 1879, and more closed on the 1880 (Simon Bolivar facing Right )

Yvert is French, only. I like it for the back of book material that supplements Scott Classic (and, to a lesser, but still useful, degree, Gibbons Commonwealth).

I like the note below the listings. Sounds like the perf counts are more aspirational than anything.

Google translate has it as:

Quote:
This issue presents an infinite number of varieties in color and, above all, in perforations.

For more information on the Escuelas specifically, I recommend Williams Castillo's 130+ page book on the subject:

At the risk of leading new collectors down the primrose path of thinking it's a good idea to be purchasing catalogues and literature, I'll just add

shipping was only $5.65! Thanks for the heads up. (I'm not sure I need it, but that's a labor of love that should be supported.)
