This thread is for anyone who has an interest in the postmarks of South Australia, particularly in the colonial and early federal period. Please share your scans or relevant information about South Australian postmarks, especially 'numeral in diamond' types, squared circles, and other early unframed and framed datestamps. Here's an 1898 squared circle from Steinfeld. It was renamed Stonefield in 1918 as German place names were considered counter to the war effort during World War I. Similar other changes to place names at the time can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...German_namesThe town name reverted back to Steinfeld in 1986.

SEMAPHORE PETERSBURGWhy did Peterborough change its name? Image result for PETERBOROUGH By the end of the first day he had sold 33 acres for £1700. To honour this remarkable achievement the town was named after Doecke and became 'Petersburg'. In 1917, when anti-German sentiment was at its height, the town's name, which sounded too German, was changed to Peterborough. PORT ADELAIDE |

Auction 2010 Torsten Weller SCHOMBURCK Unrecorded Reserve $500 Perhaps this should be spelt SCHOMBURGK Perhaps this is why not recorded. Maude is a locality on the Goyder Highway in the Mid North region of South Australia. The locality of Maude occupies the entire Hundred of Maude from which it derives its name. The Hundred of Maude was renamed in 1918 after General Maude as part of the programme of alteration of "names of enemy origin". The Hundred of Maude had previously been the Hundred of Schomburgk, named in 1880 for Dr Richard Von Schomburgk, the second director of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens |

Thanks FDS. Sorry, I cannot recall, my metadata shows I downloaded 16th April 2015 I have two adjoining images of the same date, A stamp and a image of a Railway Carriage. It was either the result of research, or more possibly, I have bid on lot from my North American dealer, and been out bid. Aha! It was indeed research, here was my query in 2015 (So either my dealer, or an ebay image of the time) |

Sth Australia Squared Circle on Lettercard FARRELLS FLATWIKI Once the heart of a thriving farming community, Farrell Flat today is largely a satellite town to the larger towns nearby. It has retained its own identity, with a functioning hotel, cafe and meeting house, engineering business and grain silos. The town was surveyed as Hanson in 1870 and did not officially become Farrell Flat until 19 September 1940.[4] The name Farrell's Flat had been in use for some time, this being the name of the railway station.[5] The nearby town of Davies was officially renamed to Hanson on 19 September 1940.[5] Farrell Flat was named for Colonial Chaplain and Dean of Adelaide, James Farrell (26 November 1803 – 26 April 1869).[6] Farrels Flat 1912 Carting grain to railhead 12 Bullocks |

Rod222 Thank you for the identifications of the Post Offices and, for the sake of curiosity, I have already pinpointed them in an atlas. I remain in awe of those that are able to grab and manipulate the images into such a neat and tidy display. I know that once you know how, it would be fairly quick and simple to do, but I am one of this people who's eyes quickly glaze over when someone tries to explain to me how to do something like that. Any skills that I may have on the computer are hard won, believe me. There are many, many brick walls in the web world.
It also makes me feel quite inclined to scan postmarks in the remaining States, just in case threads are started for them.
