Still in the process of rehoming my old Harris Citation Album and found a whole page of old Austria that I remember getting in a Long Island yard sale in about 1973 where I purchased a big glassine envelope of about 400 stamps for $3.

Back then I was only the using those free stamp catalogues that H.E. Harris used to send out and didn't pay much attention to those pesky stamp numbers.

Anyhow this is the first one I just pulled out and looked up.

I think it is a keeper!

...not a bad R.O.I.

That's a newspaper tax stamp (Scott #PR7) from 1890.

If she has been along for the ride this long - 50 years, than I would call it a keeper too! Even if not the one, you thought she was .

Thank you John!

...and DUH!!!

I should have caught that from my old friend Hans at Ramstein who always used to say "Sie sollen nicht in der Lage sein, die Zeitung durch Ihren Kaffee zu lesen!"

(Zeitung being the operative word.)

Also, Außerdem macht Eile Verschwendung!

Looks like I still got 1/3 of my money back anyhow.

Finally made it back to the Newspaper Tax section of Austria and now I need some help on identifying these two:

Not sure if the 1K Blue is a PR2, a PR2a, or a PR5; and if the 2K Brown is a PR3 or a PR6.

Scott talks about the reprints (PR5 & PR6) having the shield bigger and there being eight lines above the white square and nine below, instead of five - some are blurred out on these and the cancellations don't help much either.

Any ideas? My guess is that they are both of the Redrawn variety, so looking for some confirmation.

Thanks,

Al

I wish I could change the original topic on this thread, but just one more question on Newspaper Stamps...

Here's page P-3 in my Steiner Austria:

This one I'm assuming is one of the Privately Perforated varieties that Scott talks about but doesn't list. Assuming it is genuine, does anyone know if these are harder to find or worth more than a quarter like the rest of this series? LOL

Debating whether or not to give it its own page.

Just curious,

Al

What you have is PR5 & PR6. PR2 & PR3 pictured below. There's an easier way to tell them apart beyond the shield/lines. If the "banderol" (that curly thing) is coming off the eagle's crown, it's the earlier issue. If coming off the eagle's beak, it's the latter.

Re the 1920 newspaper issue, from what I've seen, they don't have a premium. Can be found for same price as imperf on Delcampe, for example.

Excellent Info!

Thank you gmot!

Scott's description was a bit vague:

"Type I - The banderol on the crown of the left eagle touches the beak of the eagle.
Type II - The banderol does not touch the beak."

They should have said that the "curly thing" ORIGINATES on the beak and it would have been easier to decipher.

I found the Coat of Arms on Wikipedia yesterday and it helped to clear-up the issue also:

Thanks again,

Al
