One of a series of articles about the Windsors' finances, this one about the stamp collection

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...p-collection

Hard to believe that the gift of a Laos collection had huge value. But easy to believe that George V had considerabke advantages over his coevals when acquiring new and other issues.

He would've had enormous sway for first right of refusal I'd imagine.

I've seen the first half of the Tapling collection (drool) but don't think I'll get up close and personal to KGVs holdings.

Thank you for sharing this story... Interesting. There was one collector that could out compete King George V https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philipp_von_Ferrary Not sure who else could.

To my knowledge, there are three complete sets of photographs of the Ferrary Collection. Approximately 45 three ring binders, each with about 200 photos in it. Each photo was a page from an album, and it is astonishing to see.

Didn't Arthur Hind outbid KGV for the British Guiana one cent?

My recollection is that, despite the stories, George V didn't bid for the 1c magenta, believing that it was overpriced for its condition. Hind, I think, had no success in efforts to make a profit on it before his death.
