The Caboose coil was tagged specially for philatelic sale using tagging mats that had been used for 20-cent Flag over Supreme Court coil. Since these mats were used to print millions of flag coils they show significant wear over time. You can see the progression of wear if you were to examine thousands of tagged versions of the Flag over Supreme Court as I have. The worn mats show portions of the design in the tagged image.

As such Caboose coils tagged with these mats also show this wear pattern. Below is an example of the Caboose coil tagging performed with these mats. You can see the image of the flag coil showing in the tagging.

I have examined the tagging on literally over a thousand of these Caboose coils and they have all displayed some form of this wear pattern. Recently I found one pair and a single that are quite different form the typically tagging pattern. Below is the coil pair example.

As you can see it is appears quite different. The tagging is much grainier and doesn't show any wear. Anyone have any thoughts or insights as to how this example came about?

I believe it is a case of a combination of over-inking and a 2-way shift.

Mstocky, I have several of each that you show. Not just on the Caboose, but especially on the 12.5 cent coil. You are correct with your explanation about the worn tagging mat.
Your second picture shows a correct tagging mat, but the mat was positioned incorrectly. The vertical bar was supposed to be positioned over the perforations, and the horizontal bar should have been where the knife slit the coil roll

PS. I forgot one important item.
Your first pictures, the stamp with the worn tagging mat is printed on type I paper. The last picture with the stamp with tagging bars is printed on type II paper.
Most likely these stamps were printed at different printing runs.

Thanks for the quick responses. These would have been my guesses, except for the paper types.

Peter, I should have added, I checked and the paper types (I & II) match per your comments.
