No Amex, just my Visa and debit cards. They were an older couple so I can't say their reason for no card transactions, especially since they spoke next to no English and me next to no French. In Sweden it is hard to find a retail store that accepts cash so I thought France would be the same. In this case I was wrong. Oh well, I will shop for French stamps again when I return to the US.
The custom is definitely inconsistent in independent French shops. When I go up to Le Marché Aux Puces and see things I like in a stand, before getting committed I snoop around for a card machine at the till or ask if they have one. If no, move on. It's certainly surprising not to have one if your wares include anything that someone might buy for more than EUR500 in the aggregate.
I wonder if some merchants accept Paypal in payment? They could send you an invoice for the required amount which you could pay from your phone. Or even without an invoice, one could simply send the cash if they are a member, and you wind up with documentation of the transaction.
Paying with credit or debit card is a comfortable and very fast method but probably every customer should decide which method of payment he or her prefers to use. There are dealers who accept only Paypal payment but if you do not have a registration at the system in question you could not buy the item you want. This limits your options to buy anything which the seller is currently offering on his store. As NSK mentioned earlier elderly persons may be confused by this technology. This is the case in our country ,no one wishes to use credit cards so the Bulgarian Post is currently used as pay office for pensions. Unfortunately the quantity of send letters and packages now is not so large as it was before the new technologies arrived in our country. There is very small income from these services which makes the maintenance of this institution a very hard task. Official statistics shows only 8% of the Bulgarian Post share in the postal services market ,which is mainly controlled by a group of private companies for courier services.
Bump. Here are photos taken today o give a flavor of the street for those who have not been there. BEHR is an auction house where I picked up some lots today; the others are retail dealers. BEHR has two storefronts and the image shows just one. Several other dealers and auction houses are in the street or nearby.
