Hi I picked this up at an antique shop in so. cal. I picked it up just because it was odd. But after a little research I found that the stamps were likely from around 1870's and American. But my question now is does this have any value with the most of the stamps being cut and glued together? Some of the stamps were rather expensive but that was as a singular stamp. Any help is appreciated
Yes, a few stamp collectors might enjoy that piece of vintage art to hang on the wall of their stamp room, but unfortunately the stamps there have zero collectible value anymore after being cut up and their perforations cut off.
I love the little teeth surrounding the photo insets. Quite elaborate detail work there. A fun conversation piece but no value in the stamps themselves because of their condition.
1870s-1880s looks about right. Some of the stamps are American, others are Dutch, British, and possibly elsewhere. I'd guess this may have been made in Europe rather than the US based on the relatively large number of higher-denomination (5c 10c and 30c ) US stamps that were used on international mail more often than the common domestic 2c letter rate stamps.
Stamp collectors are often looking for unique items for their collection. What you have us really unique, and someone will definitely be interested in it. I could see this being in an auction lot. Maybe you get $20 and maybe $500?
Are those stamps or just prints? They look like prints and part of those prints is faded, as is one of the portraits.
Indeed, someone collecting stamps might like it. Most stamp collectors, however, will consider it clutter. You should not be surprised to get $ 5 for it. Then again, nor should you be surprised to get $ 50 for it.
Hi thanks for the responses, much appreciated. And as for NSK question regarding them being prints, the answer is no, they are definitely actual stamps I know it is hard to see from the pictures but in person you can see the individual stamps a bit better. Regardless of the possible value of this piece I paid only $35 and got 5 pieces of art and at least 2 of them I've come to find out have signicantly more value so I am happy with it either way. Thanks again, I appreciate you guys taking the time to share your knowledge with me.
If truly real stamps (confirmed by original poster) AND truly vintage artwork AND I was geographically nearby (of which I am not), I would hang it in my office as a conversation piece.
Summation: Someone will want it. The fading is sad, but a fact of aged exposure.
