First, with John Becker.

Quote:
Im confused... When did I ask anyone to appraise the items?

I did not discuss "appraisal."

Quote:
can items be listed as highest offer and a not shown reserve? In other words, do I have to list my Reserve Price?...

I recently received a letter in the mail from Spink which read that they were... looking for items to buy/consign, etc. Has anyone ever used their services in which you brought items to them to buy?...

Conversely, maybe selling to US house or a US buyer direct is a better return??

The three different comments with internal highlights by me is why I used the term "dancing around" and posted the video about determining a price for your materiel.

When you have a reserve price (hidden or not) and also discuss a second price, you are doing the price "dancing around." When "better return" is used, again two number are being consider, a first one and then a higher one which is again, price "dancing around."

Edited to add "with John Becker" for clarity since my post jumped from page 1 to create the beginning of page 2.

Without a response from them, I know not where the letter comes from or who the person really is.

Sure you do, it's printed on the letter. Surely, you've gotten postcards from realtors advertising their services? Or plumbers? Do you call them up to verify the legitimacy of those mailings? What's the difference?

Yikes! Ok, so you get a better idea of what I asked - " Has anyone ever used their services in which you brought items to them to buy? I sent a copy to their home office to verify its authenticity but never heard back. So im just guessing its an authentic offer??"

If I were going to use the services from a postcard unsolicited offer from a provider I've never used before - yes, I would investigate. I've never, ever, ever, used a service from a business postcard mailing. Ever. Do you watch the news or read the papers about all the scams these days? All I did was ask if anyone has used their services and and guessed that it was authentic and stated that they never, so far, responded to my query.

You did the right thing by asking about a stamp company you know little about that sent you a letter.

OP didn't say he wasn't familiar with Spink, only that he was suspicious that they would actually mail him a solicitation.

re reserves:
I detest hidden reserves. It may be a matter of word choice, but why not just say: "Minimum bid of $x". That way everyone openly knows the "reserve" situation and I know whether to invest any time in evaluating the lots thoroughly, etc.

Along the lines of expectations, for something like a grouping of Farley issues, I recently watched several moderate-sized lots sell on ebay for about 16% of catalog. ebay is still probably the best way to move material due to its broad viewership.

Thanks. Very helpful.

Sorry, I dont follow this line of logic. And, I've never watched Taxi - so I didn't get that either.

All was explained in the clip. Anyway, Jim (Christopher Lloyd) set something of Louie's (Danny Devito) on fire. The damage was only $8-9000 dollar. Jim's father sent a black signed check to Jim for Louie to fill in an amount. Louie a conniving gentleman, wanted to get as much money as her could without getting turned down. You see him deciding on an amount, "a number" to place on the check.

Selling stamp is about asking or getting the right number.

As with anything.

Like I said, I'm not asking for a "number" or "appraisal". But thank you for the translation of comedic humor.

I think I've gotten some good feedback here. A quote from another oldie:

Since you have no need for a number, just donate the material to the American Philatelic Society. As a 501(c)(3) organization you can take a tax deduction if the material has a number value, including the cost to send the material fro donation. Clean neat, no number argument or request to change a number, no flaky buyers, no commissions and the hobby benefits.
