I recently came into a large batch of stamps from an estate sale. Among them was this stamp in a hard case... which I found odd as it was a #405 and was about to put it aside before I realized the obvious. Washington's head is inverted. I searched the internet and other sites, but couldn't find anything related to a 405 sheet/group with inverted heads.

Has anyone seen this on the #405? Would appreciate any thoughts.

Looks like a philatelic fantasy: someone used a razor blade or scalpel to cut out George's head, invert it, and glue it in place. These are common for the Colombian series and some others.

Holy crap... just looked at under the 40x magnifier, and you're right. In fact, now that I know, you can clearly see the double circle on the top on the scan. I hope whomever put this in a hard case didn't get ripped off too much. Thanks for the reply. It's the first fraud I've run into... crazy.

Single colored stamps cannot suddenly invert in the center without the aid of sharp objects and glue. Learn from this when searching for an affordable C3a.

Quite obvious this was done after-use as the cancel lines do not align:

Here is one of my favorites cropped from a full cover. The left design was razored and glued back to create a pseudo tete-beche pair. Very fun, but very little value.

The best fabrications are the 1922 ones (Scott US 551 ->) where they cut the heads of one color out and put them on a different denomination.

Actually very striking!

Don't have any scans to show (yet).

Will have to do some searching.

This is a groping I have posted before. I got them as a group probably 30+ years ago.

And another type fun monkey business I have shown before:

John, thank you!

Those are the ones!

Somebody was bored as there seems to be a pretty significant number of those...
