Hi Folks,

The image below is of a stamp that appears to be New Brunswick 5. Although it is difficult to see, the overprint is there. Unfortunately, since it's difficult to see, I understand that the overprint itself can't be discussed in this thread, at least for the moment.

More generally, I have a few questions.

1- Do any of you have a copy or a good image of a genuine copy to share in this thread for comparison?

2- Although Scott doesn't mention it, are there known forgeries of this stamp?

3- Scott also does not mention reprints- were any reprints issued for this stamp?

4- Are there any general algorithms available on what to check in the imprint that might help decide if it's a forgery vs. genuine?

Thanks very much.

According to Robson Lowe's Encyclopedia of British Empire Postage Stamps, Vol.V. "A large number of Connell proofs have been perforated in order to deceive the collector. The genuine Connell's perforation is ragged and 11.60 to 11.75. Forgeries are 11.80 to 12.00. An engraved counterfeit is known, done possibly by John Alexander of Toronto..." Hope this helps.

rdavid, Interesting that SG and Scott list this as a perf 12; exactly what you cited as a forgery. For the record, I have zero knowledge of this stamp or anything New Brunswick; just found it an odd contradiction. (And of course no catalog is right 100.00% of the time.)

Perfs appear to be dubious on all 4 sides...

The 5c Connell stamp is usually found with poor centering. The perforations are nearly always damaged from scissor-separation or are roughly pulled apart, the result of poor perforating. They also usually have creases, thins, and/or lack gum.
