I can see why there is confusion re: PF. Their grading manual states, "Gum condition--
The grade of a stamp is not affected by whether its original gum has been hinged or remains
unhinged. If the stamp only has partial or disturbed original gum, this will be noted and the stamp will
not be graded.

Yet a key word search for "Graded w/ disturbed gum" yields 50 results

Troutbum, would have only returned if the stamp came back not original gum, which was my major concern that it was a regumming job gone bad.

Cjd, definitely keeping and moving on. Yes, they only get harder and I will need more than your 2d and my 2d.

Still curious why the high variance in catalog price for US 243,244,245 given the similar number of stamps issued

Would definitely NOT soak off OG to resubmit as "faultless" NG.

Also popularity plays a big part. The $5 is the top value and has always been the most discussed and most desired. But all are readily available, it's only a question of how much one wishes to spend.

For clarity below is the PSE population report for 243. You will note that there is a category for no gum, regummed, disturbed-partial original gum. They are all lumped together. That category has the second highest population of the four categories.

So I followed through on craigk's observation and contacted the PF to ask about the discrepancy. I still have no idea what the actual policy is, but I received a note that the information about the stamp had been sent on to Larry Lyons for further review. Today I received a new certificate with the stamp graded VF80.

A safe numerical assignation that equates to standard Scott catalog value. Very well played.

I would definitely recommend sending to the Philatelic Foundation for certification. A PF certificate remains the gold standard in expertisation.

Willwood sent it to the PF some time ago, if you look back through the thread.

Honestly, if there is no crease and reperforation, even it is RG, it's worth it as the centering is better than VF, I would say at least 85.
