My mailbox locks, so there's no way the mail carrier could get in to get a frozen bottle.

A sealed store bought bottle of water expands between 9 to 10 percent thus potentially rupturing the bottle. To prevent this you need to partially open the bottle so air inside can escape. Do you really want an unsealed bottle in your mailbox?

You will never find me without a frozen (thawing) bottle of water. Been doing it since my first year in Iraq (2005). Never had an issue to this day. I usually let it start to thaw for a bit before cracking the top. Open it slowly so that it does not squirt out at you and your fine. Never had a ruptured bottle and I am talking thousands of bottles. All "store bought" plastic bottles. Sports caps and regular screw tops. Bottled our own in Iraq and now I drink Poland Spring. Yum.
