I inherited a collection and this stamp was identified as #482 Type Ia. I imagine that this stamp gets misclassified a lot, but would appreciate comments. I understand that the design lines are stronger on the Type Ia and this stamp seems to match.

Scott # 482 is Type I, not Type Ia.

Mongoose,
You have mixed your catalog listings in your original post. They should be:
Scott 482 is type I
Scott 482A is type Ia

I suspect you are hoping for a 482A, which you do not have. To paraphrase the note under its listing ... all copies will have the characteristics of a Schermack type III coil, which means parallel top and bottom edges along with the rectangular slots at the sides. You stamp shows neither of these features.

Your suspicion this stamp was misidentified is quite justified. It is a good lesson to always approach identifications by previous owners with caution - especially with anything identified as a more valuable variety.
