Today is the start of a new era in the history of Siegel Auction Galleries.

We are launching a new auction platform that provides buyers and sellers access to all information about past, present and future auctions. It will make live internet bidding an entirely new kind of experience. And ultimately it will give sellers the power to list and sell items through the Siegel firm.

The program is called BidBaller. We think it is the most advanced and intuitive software for auction buyers and sellers. The portal is fully integrated with our website and client database. You will be able to access information from all of your accounts and sales dating back to 1992. Your personal data will be protected with the highest level of data security and privacy controls.

BidBaller will empower Siegel clients in ways that will make collecting, buying and selling more productive and rewarding. Here are just a few of the exciting new features available to bidders and buyers who log into the portal with password protection:
- View, sort, filter and save searches of auction lots based on a wide range of criteria, including Siegel's unique Power Search capabilities plus new search features for your personal interests and stored data
- See your past invoices, lots purchased, extensions and returns, payments and refunds, and a "dashboard" of statistics based on your Bid/Buy and Consign/Sell activity
- Enter maximum bids before or during the auction and/or participate in the live auction with an easy-to-use bidding interface and "I'm Out" button to let the auctioneer know you're done (but you can always start bidding again)
- Place Group/OR bids by name (for example, "5c 1847 Gems"), set a sale budget (which can be exceeded), set a maximum spending limit for a sale or group of lots within a sale, request phone bidding on specific lots, set email/text notification that a lot of interest is 10 lots away during the sale, and much more
- Participate in the live auction with the ability to register with multiple paddles and to change paddle identification during the sale or even during the bidding for a single lot, making it harder for your competitors to identify your bidding patterns
- Select a bidding Avatar from hundreds of images to become the face of each paddle you use in the live auction, which makes the competition even more interesting and exciting
- Track your performance with "How Am I Doing?" statistics, giving you the opportunity to fine-tune your bidding and buying strategy
- Send and receive private messages between you and the auctioneer
- Find your results in real time and see an invoice once it has been reviewed for accuracy
- Track shipments of purchases and check on status of invoice payments
- Stay informed about upcoming sales and lots of interest
For sellers, all consignment information for a particular account will be available through the secure Siegel portal. Consignments may be labeled for easy monitoring (for example, "Gem Quality Airmail Stamps Collection"). The status of consignments, settlement details and downloadable statements will be available at any time.

And we're just getting started…

BidBaller Version 2.0, to be launched within the next year, will give clients the ability to self-generate consignments and have them listed in Siegel auctions after review. This will be a gamechanger for collectors and dealers who want to tap into Siegel's vast reservoir of bidders and buyers.

Following this message, you will receive an email inviting you to activate your account by signing in and setting your password. A few easy steps, and you will enter the new era of Siegel Auctions!

Regards,
Scott Trepel

If you go to the Siegel webpage, they have posted a "Guinea Pig" auction for Saturday - it is all material owned by Siegel so if the platform has problems, no consignors will be injured.

WOW ---This sounds like a great tool . Gives the buyers and sellers more control over their account with a better view of their account .

We got one minor problem -- Wrong time for this .

WHAT'S WRONG ???? ----Well three things . First the speculators have left the collectiables market ,that means less craziness in pricing , second the big ,I mean BIG collectors who spend serious money on their philatelic purchases are all dying like in ages of 70's and 80's years old are shutting their albums .
Third , prices are going nowhere for the past 15 years everybody is asking why put $10,000 or $100,000 into stamps when I can put my money into 5%+ annually returns ,while stamps are not moving right now .

Morning Scott and all,

Yep, if you are more interested in money than philately, further price increases look limited. However, if you collect for the enjoyment of collecting, you can still find two or more folks chasing up the price on material they both desire. Clearly dealers cater to the first type of buyers building their business model accordingly. However us collectors are still on the hunt. The challenge for a dealer is being able to economically survive as a business operator relying on many many smaller dollar sales relative to the bib buck sales.

I signed up, and it was interesting to see my purchases going back to the 1990s...I wish I still had some of that stuff

The consignor side of this seems potentially pretty useful.

Hopefully the live real-time bidding software will be easy to use and be responsive.

I like the ability to enable 2-factor authentication - modernizing security a bit at least.

They have the concept of paddle-avatars, and also the ability to change your bidder number + paddle within the same sale (I think), in order to somewhat conceal ones identity.

One question I do have - Siegel has an "app" for my iPhone, but off-hand it doesn't seem to be updated. Anyone have any info on that?

The app uses the auction mobility platform and I know Scott was unhappy with the platform. I assume the BidBaller platform will completely replace the auction mobility platform after the postal history sale next week. I would guess that there will be a new BidBaller based app, but I'm just guessing.

by the way - thanks for mentioning the 2-factor verification option. It would be bad if my wife saw all my invoices from the past 20 years all in one place

Interesting. I already have a Siegel account which I've used successfully for years, but now when I go to log into their website, it keeps telling me the ID/PW are wrong.

When I tried to re-register (using the same email ID and PW as before), it keeps telling my that my PW needs to have at least one capital letter (it does), one number (it has 3) and one special character (it does).

They don't list the acceptable special characters. Any suggestions?

I ran into the special character issue as well.
I just had to play with it until I found something that it deemed to be a special character.

I registered and took a look at past purchases. The records are good but incomplete. There are a number of stamps that I placed on extension, but that field is blank for those items. The "certificate" fields are blank for every item even though every item had at least one certificate.

I emailed Siegel and they immediately manually re-entered my old password into their database and now everything works fine.

I am a fairly regular buyer at Siegel's - not big, but regular - and I remember an 'incident' perhaps 10 or 15 years ago where I bought some stamps and proceeded to lose the receipt (I had already paid, and, heck, maybe I enclosed both copies of the receipt when I paid) which I needed for my records. I am funny that way - I save all my receipts. I called them up a few times and asked if they could please send me another copy of that receipt. I never received one. Anyway, if I can remember which sale it is, I guess I can now get my copy of that receipt!

I haven't yet signed up, but I will and I look forward to all that I can do with it.

As a fellow who literally has a closet of thousands of operating systems and applications, and who looks forward to trying new software about as much as getting a stamp or cover I have wanted for years; I was a bit surprised that I had never heard of "BidBaller".

So I looked into it and found the home page here https://bid-baller.com/

Surely with BidBaller being described as "the most advanced and intuitive software for auction buyers and sellers"...I must be missing something.

Then I realized that BidBall apparently is a Scott T in-house app from Siegel?

The release also says

I cannot help but wonder what this actually means. What stress testing and security testing has been done? Given that this platform appears to only be a Siegel thing, has any 3rd party worked with it? And as most people know, the majority of data vulnerabilities are physical issues; people get physical access to the server(s), backups, or mass storage devices. In other words, what is the likelihood that every single person who comes into physical contact with the data holding device is properly vetted and bonded?

This is not stamp club data like a member mailing list; this is data that has significant value (financial data of mostly older people with wealth) and as such, represents a juicy target to people with bad intentions.

I hope they allow people to opt out of having their personal data accessible.
