Hi all,

anyone familiar with this shield? I cannot find it in Simpson or any of the other books I have, I did find a second cover with a lesser example, but would love to have it confirmed with a image of a 3rd copy

For the time period of the cover a better work would be Skinner-Eno. It is downloadable on the US Classics Society website. I do not think your cancel will qualify as a shield, but it is unusual for the time period. The index by state and town for Skinner-Eno does not show a listing for Durhamville NY, but there may be a similar cancel without town of use attribution

Neat early cancel. Due to its light strike, it is not completely clear, but it is very interesting. It appears to have 5 sides and a couple "ends" appear to have a concave curve edge. To me, this DOES make it appear to be an attempt to represent a solid shield shape (rotated about 45 deg to the left in the top envelope and almost side-ways in the second envelope).

I don't see a design like it in Whitfield or Skinner/Eno.

Its a small town, and the dates of mailing of the two covers are only a few days apart.

The above two data-points likely explain why there aren't more of these out there.
