There is a very famous heavy metal musician in Norway, Fenriz of the band Darkthrone, who works in the "postal industry", Here are some links about it: (WARNING: links may be moderately NSFW)

I'm curious about the following, (excerpt from interview):

Quote:
How are things going at the post office?

It's more like the postal industry. I never actually worked in a post office. I had to do training classes about twenty-three years ago. I delivered mail for three weeks. But that was a crash course. I've been working in the postal industry for twenty-four-and-a-half years. Now I work part time, twenty-seven hours a week. Through all these years I've done different chores. But for the past 20 years I've always had a headset on. If I work a seven hour shift I get to listen to seven hours of music, which is also sort of a job. It works out fine.

I think everyone in America has the impression that Fenriz is a mailman.

[laughs] Like Charles Bukowski? No, It's not like that at all. And Charles didn't do that, either. He was sorting mail. Today, I was running a machine that sorts 40,000 letters an hour. The rest of the day was coding letters. It's not laid back. You have to code like a ****. But it's quiet and I get to listen to my headphones. Darkthrone did a general working class song ("I Am The Working Class" on Circle The Wagons) but people seem to really attach to the mail thing.

He makes a point of saying not the post office but "postal industry" (suggesting private company), but is talking about mail sorting machines. From US point of view, I'm thinking maybe UPS Store? But even they don't have mail sorting machines that I know of, I can't think of any entity besides USPS which has mail sorting machines, so any idea what he could be talking about? I'm thinking maybe something like DHL / Deutsche Post, does Norway have something like that?

@tsmatx, the national postal service in Norway - Posten Norge - owns a logistics company that also delivers mail - Bring. Posten Norge is for private customers, Bring is for business customers. ( https://www.postenbring.no/en/ ). "Postal industry" is to underline that he works in a "mail factory", a sorting centre, as opposed to "post office" of which there are very few left.

Could it not just be PostNord?

I think you're reading too much into it, and are letting his choice of words as a non-American English native speaker mislead you. My impression is that he's just using "industry" instead of "service." He makes a point of saying he doesn't work in a post office (the customer-facing apparatus) and instead works in a different part of the letter and package movement chain. We in the States wouldn't call a mail sorter a "mailman" or "mail carrier," either; they're an employee of the US Postal Service, but don't necessarily work at a Post Office.

Generally, in Europe, people would speak of "the Post" or a variant of it and not of "industry" when they work for the national mail carrier.

Sure, and in the States people might colloquially say they work for "the Post Office" instead of "United States Postal Service." But we're talking about a specific individual and his choice of words, not in generalities. This article says the man is a "post office employee": https://loudwire.com/darkthrone-old...z-interview/
