Received a letter today that was underpaid - 63˘ instead of the current first class rate of 66˘. Not caught by USPS! I am unsure if I also have sent such underpaid letters since the rate increase.

How much current first class mail is going through at the old rate?

Frankly, once the USPS went to FOREVER Stamps, the amount of news regarding pending rate changes, dropped off a cliff. I think the more stamps applied, the less likely some USPS employee will bother to pull out a calculator to add them up. Schools stopped math memorization some time ago for some political purpose and the change was discussed even back in 2002 after several years of bring calculators into grade schools.

Nowadays I see quite a few underpaid envelopes. These pictures depict some from April-May 2023 when postage was 63˘.

Only one was caught for "postage due."

Though the image fails to depict detail, one is a Nonprofit Precencel, which is on the envelope lumpy because it is reused.

Are we sure 63 cents isn't a valid rate for metered First Class mail under 1 ounce?

I missed that detail in the first post: meter mail. The current meter rate is 63˘.

I asked a mailman a year or two ago about stamps on envelopes, etc.
He said he is so busy when he delivers mail he doesn't even check them.
I guess it is not a priority when it is a few cents.
I always try to keep up with the current rates and add the correct postage.
Easier when you use a forever stamp.

In fairness to the mailperson, I don't think it falls on him/her to count postage. That's upstream.
