Collecting Hawaiian Stamp Covers & Ephemera

Aloha from Texas. My "Hawaii" philately collection include covers from 1827 to the 1960's. I also collect signed documents from Hawaiian Royalty and other ephemera for my collection. Despite being born and raised in Hawaii, learning Hawaiian history was really not a prerequisite. It's from my collection is where I have gained the most knowledge of Hawaii's history. This past spring, I started to catalog my collection on a secured website to show my friends and relatives (including my wife and daughter). Unfortunately, it amounted to lighting a dud firecracker. To my surprise, no one was "really" interested. I am a member of APS and (HPS) Hawaiian Philatelic Society. Perhaps I can find other "Hawaii - Possessions" Collectors who may share interesting covers or ephemera. If only 1 more person is interested in my collection from this website, then it's a "Win" for me. Mahalo for taking the time to read this!

Enjoy having fun with stamps! That is the name of this game. Wonderful you are carrying on your father's collection. You are the next steward of a family treasure you can pass on to future generations. Its value as a family heirloom wil always surpass it monetary value.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Thanks Don. I will later post images of Hawaii covers that are in my collection. Though my own family, friends, co-workers are not interested, "Who collect stamps?", I collect for the personal enjoyment of the hobby. At least my wife accompanies me to shows, i.e. WESTPEX and the GASS show about a month ago in Cleveland. Had a great time!

Thanks Txstamp. As I live in Cypress, TX, I'll be at the stamp show next week in Humble. On a separate note, I do specialize in Pre-1900 Galveston covers and Galveston ephemera as well. I do have a small collection of Indianola postmarks on covers. Hoping one of my favorite dealers whose initials are CD will be there, instead of Cape Cod.

Who collects stamps and covers? We do, and we are proud to say it here on SCF. You have found your kind of people. I collect the world and have a modest group of Hawaiian covers and postcards. I showed a couple of them on this thread:

Hello Linus. Thanks for sharing the link to your Hawaii cover. I currently have 220 entries cataloged into a secured website, designed for museums and historical societies, but allows for personal collections as well. I believe I am unable to provide a link to this website, as I do not want any SCF violations. I will post images and hope for feedback for anyone who is interested.
My collection also includes documents signed by King Kamehameha III, IV, V, King David Kalakaua, Queen Liliuokalani, Queen Emma and others. Anyway, I don't want to be to wordy.

Yes, txstamp, I am familiar with that website, but thanks for checking. I have had some email correspondence with "FG", author of that website. On my trips to Hawaii, I do stop by and see "DM" Hawaii's main stamp dealer, who I know very well and have made purchases in person and via the phone. He has assisted me via email on 2nd opinions and is the head expertiser for HPS.

Aloha DesertDweller, I'll try to get to 50 posts so I can provide a link to a website that has all my Hawaiian covers & ephemera collection. My collection of covers goes back from 1827 to 1960's. Any image I post to SCF, duplicates work I've already done in cataloging my collection. The host website I have my collection on is designed for museums and historical societies, but allows for personal collections as well. If the staff members of SCF can provide me clearance sooner, that would be great. Otherwise, matter of scanning and cropping pics, one by one, all over again, as time allows.

I also collect Hawaii and looking forward to seeing your collection. I just got back from Waikiki but wasn't able to visit any collecting folks.

Aloha Dave! Hope you had a great time in Waikiki. Too bad you didn't have a chance to see Don at his stamp and coin shop on Ala Moana Blvd. It is Hawaii's largest and he is the chief expertiser for HPS. Since you mentioned Waikiki, see my favorite pic taken at Waikiki beach on 5-21-1941. I hope you and the SCF community likes the pic as much as I owning it. Mahalo!

Nice Px. Is that the Moana Hotel in background? I spend a few evenings there
listening to the guy playing the piano and singing. Classic old place. Lots of old
stuff upstairs in the mini-museum. No stamps though. Next time I'll check out the
stamp store. I may have visited it many years ago but didn't collect Hawaiian stuff then.
There used to be a dealer in a small koisk (sp?) in a shopping center on Kauai. I'm sure
gone now. This was in 1979.
