Bophuthatwana is a self-governing tribal enclave in South Africa. They began officially issuing stamps in 1977. In the Scott catalog, you will find their stamps listed at the end of the South Africa listings, along with the other enclaves of Ciskei, Transkei, and Venda.

Some more information may be had via "Black Homelands"
http://www.worldstatesmen.org/South...melands.html

Further information from 2003 the subject was
on a similar topic "Venda" as I recall.

One of the four South African Homelands all reintegrated back into South Africa in 1994, they were set aside for specific ethnic groups and granted independence from South Africa in the following years :

Bophuthatswana - 1977
Transkei - 1978
Venda - 1979
Ciskei - 1981

The stamp issues are mainly thematic and no real gems are to be found - a couple of imperf errors. Genuine postally used stamps are hard to come by and I have yet to see complete collections of used homelands - I think that in itself would be a rarity. Their revenue stamps fetch a premium - does anyone have a revenue catalogue ?

Listings of their stamps can be found here:

http://www.stampsoftheworld.co.uk/i...phuthatswana ( Still needs work )
http://www.stampsoftheworld.co.uk/i...egory:Ciskei - (Complete)
http://www.stampsoftheworld.co.uk/i...tegory:Venda - (Complete)

Bophuthatswana - Pronounced Bo - put - ets - swana
