King David Kalakaua imposed taxes on an array of instruments – including bills of lading, bills of sale and mortgages. The most common tax was $1, payable with #HR3 of the first adhesive Hawaiian revenue stamp series. What is interesting is the cancellation of the Revenue Stamp by the "Supreme Court of the Hawaiian Islands". I have never seen a cancellation of this nature.
This stamp/cancellation is on a legal document concerning the "Guardianship" of children from a prominent Hawaiian woman who fell from grace. Very fascinating but sad story, of Hawaiian history. Document date is Feb 29, 1884. (not shown)
