Would anyone know why this stamp has a number printed in the top left corner?

I've never seen this before.

The stamp is not illustrated in my Scott catalogue, so I'm unable to tell you what it is.

Your stamp is a Swiss "Portofreiheitsmarke"
For several years these were issued by the Swiss Post Office to certain Non-profit organizations so they could use the mails for free.
Your stamp, number 830 was assigned to the "Armenpflege der Judischen Gemeinde, Luzern"

Yes, it was basically in the first half of the 20th century

These were issued 1935-1943, this might be Sc #S14, not positive though.

thinking it says dec. 33, the directions and such looks the same as the other 3.

You can see the closed loop of the '6'.

Also, classic_paper appears to be correct
