Hello I have a Michel specialized catalogue from 1994. I have inherited an extremely enormous collection of stamps and covers from numerous countries. Germany and Canadian issue certainly comprise the bulk of the collection. I have spent the past 6 months 8 to 10 hours a day organizing and pricing the german collection. My question is I am curious if the current Michel catalogue is relatively similar as far as the catalogue value. I pray there is not to much difference. Any feedback would be appreciated...thank you

I can't imagine that it is after 28 years. You can spot check recent actual sales of material to find the "real" value. |

To start with, the 1994 edition quotes Deutschmarke and the recent ones quote Euros. The 1994 catalogue was issued only shortly after German re-unification. This had impact on 'DDR' stamps. Markets do change, certainly over a span of 30 years. More and more varieties get listed. PostmasterGS posted why he keeps buying new editions of Michel's Deutschland catalogues. The specialised editions will have more new listings than the basic catalogues, but there will be overflows. https://goscf.com/t/85499#792031 |

The change to the € also changed the value of post-WWII stamps denominated in DM, as they could no longer be used for postage, thus reducing the floor price for pre-€ material. |

The actual value of most of the stamps will not have changed very much. But, the change from DM to € in 2001 will make it very difficult, as it's not as simple as just converting the DM catalog value to a € value. |

Oops! Quote: I have spent the past 6 months 8 to 10 hours a day organizing and pricing the german collection. That could be another reason to buy a more recent catalogue. I would expect the catalogue to have improved the scans of stamps and added colour. That should help identifying similar looking stamps. |

Yes, it's time to upgrade your catalog.
May I ask the end purpose of the large time investment? |

well to honor my late father for one He collected stamps and covers for 40 years. he owned an ebay account selling stamps called Sherbrooke. he passed away a couple years ago and I inherited a 40 foot sea container filled to the top with stamps and covers. He even spent the time and money to have a climate controlled environment in this sea can. 6 months ago I started to inspect his life long work, and passion, and I admit I never truly understood why he spent so much time until now. in many ways I have learned more about him then when he was alive....through his collection. I am not quite sure what my destination or goal is yet but the journey thus far, has paid in spades. My initial purpose has been to prepare the collection for an insurance policy. I had no idea what I was getting into........ive almost completed 3 countries and from what I can see I have at least 40 more to go and when they are finished il have to start his favorite area of first day covers....over 500 legal boxes and a few 4 foot steel filing cabinets of first day covers. the appraiser on average charge 200.00 dollars or more an hour. figured I save a few bucks didnt realize I wouldd lose a few months or a couple years lol |
