Can someone help me out with a valuation on these 5 shilling stamps please? Many perfs are short or trimmed.

The title of this forum is "Introduce Yourself Here".

IF you had posted in the right place I would answer "check ebay". Every stamp is damaged (perfs cut) so don't expect much, if anything.

SG59, what catalogue did you get that number from?

Those look like SG180/181. Perfect examples are offered by a dealer like Andrew G. Lajer at GBP 90 - 100.
ebay lists them between a few pounds and GBP 75 (oh well, you should not deny people their dreams).
So, probably, you are talking south of GBP 5 each, unless the cancel is special.

Thanks for the info, new to the community and dusting off a collection I have not touched for 40 years.

NSK - thanks for the correction. SG 2022 edition. To the right of 180/181 is the # 59, in my ignorance I thought that was the # to use. Much to learn.

CND stamp guy,

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Wishing you many enjoyable future days in our hobby. Russ

Welcome.

In theory, this could have been posted in the classic section. Live and learn.

The "59" relates to the image in the catalogue. You'll see that the picture of this stamp has a 59 below it. Many stamps will share the same general design, and in those cases, the image number will repeat down the listings.

You might as well check to make sure that you don't have an inverted watermark. If you really have time on your hands, you can make sure you don't have a perf 12 example. (Perf 12s were not issued, so they shouldn't exist used.) Of course, you almost certainly don't have either, but since they're already in your hands, and aren't going to make you rich, you might as well get some extra use out of them by checking?

As has been hinted at, catalogue pricing for GB material is for spectacular examples. You have some with nicer-than-average centering for the issue but the perfs and corners let them down.

You might find that you can pick one that is "good enough" to be a spacefiller for now, and it might be a long time before you decide to replace it.

My 2d.

Agree with earlier comments in that you have damaged copies and should probably keep the "best" while waiting for another to come along. I purchased a large collection of GB some time ago, and my copy has the same type of problem. Here were have a folded perf at top left, and poor right bottom perforation which would dramatically lower the potential sales value. Scott 108.
