Just getting started collecting stamps, and have settled on U.S. parcel post and postage dues as a starting point. When going through ebay listings, I came across postage due bills for sale with multiple stamps affixed and found them quite interesting. I was thinking that sort of thing would be cool to have, even if I only get one or two of them for my collection. My question is, for someone only wanting to get a couple examples (preferably the 1930-31 design), is there something more desirable or more collectible to look for in postage due bills? Thanks in advance! John

Buy the due bill which pleases you the most. That may be one with a $5 stamp, or a large amount paid, or the most different denominations, or a solo use, or one dated on your birthday, etc. A lot of them exist, so be patient and shop around for the right one. |

Good morning, John.
The interest level in and value of a postage due bill is in the eyes of the beholder. As just a bill document they are readily available. When you collect the stamp issue affixed to it, it is valued based on the stamps affixed more than the bill itself. And then you get into where it was mailed from and when which can be more significante to some collectors that others. Personally, I have never found one from my small home town post office; but, am still on the hunt for one.

jmz5723. Quote: ...have settled on U.S. parcel post and postage dues as a starting point.... Once you get to 50 quality posts, you can shoot me emails. As my username implies, I am a collector of all things US Parcel Post stamps and more. Although the other tread to which you were linked did not have parcel post stamps per se I did post material with a parcel post connection. The $1 Airlift was to give parcels air service to US Service Personnel. If you use the search function, you can find other threads about parcel post and postage due stamps. Lastly don't forget about the green stamps, Parcel Post Postage Dues of five values. Edited to add this link to a currently active topic: https://goscf.com/t/82108&whichpage=1 . Postagedueguy does much with postage dues on this forum, however, his focus is the last set of dues, not the 1930-31s you mention. Also, https://goscf.com/t/84171 discusses the 4 cent parcel post stamp, Q-4. Just ignore or take with a large dose of skepticism the comments of Mr. 777. |

Quote: Just curious why your focus is on the later dues? I am Parcelpostguy not postagedueguy. So I can talk about him but I can't answer for him. You can ask him directly in one of the threads he started. That said, he is quite interested in the shiny verse dull gum postage dues of the last set. As that is the only postage due set in which that occurs, it could be part of the reason. Again, my guess, not his reason. Me, I started with an interest in the red and green PP & PPPD stamps, expanded from the QE (Special Handling) and then onto most things parcel post service, including Insurance, C.O.D., Air Parcel Post and early Priority Mail. As to postage due, besides the green PPPD, I like the 1/2 cent covers and covers from the 31 day July 1958 period when the was a 5 cent penalty fee on domestic postage due (AKA Plus a nickle). |

Quote: Just curious why your focus is on the later dues? Well in 1974 when the 1959 issue first when on sale over the counter I was 16 and I started with that issue. So after 50 years my collection of J88 - J104 has reached about 15,000 plate blocks and sheets and I need 1 plate block to have a complete matched set (J98 26290 UR) on the shinny gums. I need a few more on the dull gums. My favorite issue is J69 - J78, but plate blocks and sheets are much harder to come by. Have a look: https://goscf.com/t/48971 |
