I am sure the companies that currently pay taxes (local license fees, city, state, federal) are likely not sympathetic to complaints about taxing the untaxed commercial activities on ebay, etc that some may compete with.

Topics like this only reinforce the notion that the government is not us as originally intended but rather them and us. Not many people, certainly not the majority, support taxing someone for sending their child money at college a certain way.

It reminds me of when I was growing up in Taxachusetts in the 1960's. There was a huge push to tax tag sale income (tag sales had become the rage). Tax agents would actually cruise around on weekends looking for WWII veterans that were now "tax cheats". Newspapers dutifully carried articles pointing out the wrong of not reporting your tag sale windfall.

Yes, I'm sure the chattels Sally Hemmings gave birth to after Massa Tommy's attentions thought of the government as "us".

Yes, they took their cues from the property of Blair, Randolph, and the other English and Dutch aristocratic arrivals who started the whole thing.

New ebay reporting requirements affecting UK sellers:

As this flows from an OECD initiative, I imagine that EU Member States will have similar rules.

No useful guidance yet, of course.

Nope. Will result in revolt. Privacy.
It is not taxable here, unless it is run as a business.

Too late for many in the EU area. Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden all agreed to this in 2022, as did the UK. Apparently your villa in France can remain your refuge.

Here, it is only taxable if it is run like a business. If you sell your own stuff through these platforms, it is not taxable.

There is, I think, the same "my stuff" get-out in the HMRC rules. I foresee difficulties where sales hit highish levels - easy if you're disposing of your treasured collection - or when you didn't specifically buy to "trade", but your disposal of the unwanted part of your auction purchase looks very much like a trade.
