I last purchased a digital Scott US Specialized Catalog in 2021. Was thinking about buying another one but it appears that Amos Publishing is now selling a "subscription" which disappears after one year if you don't renew.

The previous "digital" version I purchased was a poorly searchable "PDF" but at least I still "own" it.

Can anyone describe their experience with the new digital approach and tell me why, as someone who might need an update not every year, I should not just revert back to paper?

Thanks

Bob

Lmao. Don't be a sheep. It's a cash grab just like what Adobe has started to do. They don't want us to own media. They want to be able to pull the plug whenever they like. Something like that happened recently with the Playstation network I believe where movies previously PURCHASED from one brand are now being deleted without refunds just because the licensing agreement ended. Do not give in to this scummy tactic. Always buy physical media whenever possible. If it's a disability issue, then stick with what you can (sounds like 2021 searchable OWNABLE is a fine thing to have)

Well it is not an issue of "disability" or "being a sheep". It was more a question of the value proposition. $105 for a paper version or more than that for something that disappears in a year. Seems like stamp information is more like a slow tectonic plate movement... not something that needs to be updated every couple of weeks. I am not running the business... that is Amos' call in terms of product marketing and pricing.

The PDF searchable version is terrible in terms of usability but at least it is permanent and portable. Was thinking it would be nice if I could download the current digital catalog data into a SQL database or the like but no dice. Proprietary information I guess.

Lastly, I probably posted this note in the wrong forum section. Mea Culpa.

Bob

Unsaid / unsayable in the '22 thread was how has Scott done w their new online subscription model. Private company doesn't have to say, but would be nice to know if they've learned.

To me, it seems, the question was asked and answered in that single sentence.

If you own, er, subscribe to Adobe Acrobat, you can have it embed OCR for fully searchable PDF. Not sure if it will work on PDF which Amos used to ship, but it works with roughly 100% accuracy for me on me pages from printed Scott catalogs which I have scanned myself and run through the OCR (although, not chapters. Those would have to added manually)

I subscribed to it through Amos Media and was able to use the digital version without a problem but now since it has moved to Scott Digital. I cannot find it and mow I am waiting for a call back. I wish I kept my paper copies.
