long wave (320-400 nm) is more useful with currency or foreign stamps

That is way to generalistic. Many countries, and especially the UK require shortwave to detect phosphor as well. After ca. 1992, both will work for the UK, although longwave not always.

"If I remember correctly, short wave (254 nm) is better for detecting tagging on US stamps"

Better isn't the right word. Fir US stamps it is required while long wave does not work at all.

What I'd love to know is how much this is costing (even a ballpark figure) the Postal Service and the Federal government as a whole as I haven't seen any figures. Not only is it affecting postal operations, obviously, but I would imagine it adds more work and cost for the Customs and Border Protection agents to filter through the shipments of counterfeit stamps.

As a side note, I have friends and family sometimes send me links to the greatly "discounted postage" they saw an ad for somewhere on the internet (thinking I would be interested). It's always disappointing to tell them that they've actually stumbled upon ads for counterfeits and to avoid them like the plague (along with a link in my reply to the USPIS report page).
