I found this in a box lot of revenue stamps I bought recently. I'm not sure what it is, and I can't find it in Scott:

I guess someone thought it was worth $4; I bet that was a long time ago. Any thoughts on this?

thanks

Joe

Yes.

George Turner's "Essays and Proofs of United States Revenue Stamps", published in 1974 by the Bureau Issues Association (now the United States Stamp Society) has the following on page 113 for "Essay 232":

It's a terrific book; the only thing wrong with it is that the prices in it were already obsolete for 20 years when it came out. Even then, no one was sure exactly where he got them from.

As John Becker noted, they are listed in Turner's book. They are likely unofficial reprints prepared by Schernikow from the original dies after he purchased the archives of the Philadelphia Banknote Company (successor to Butler & Carpenter).

Thank you.

I learned two things here. 1. identification of what I have. 2. to look on my reference shelf. I forgot I have a copy of George Turner's "Essays and Proofs of United States Revenue Stamps".

thanks

Joe
