Hello,

I recently received a big book of stamps from my father that he got from his father. The book contains stamps from the 1930s up until the 1980s. My dad wants me to find out if the stamps can be sold for a significant amount of money. I figured this would be the place to start.

I'll start with a general question, and I'm aware that the answer will likely be 'depends'. Here are some of the things that I've noticed looking through the books. Please let me know if you think these stamps have potential value.

- Several pages of stamps from Nazi Germany
- Stamps from the Space Race (US and USSR)
- Yemeni Space Program
- Many pages of Romanian stamps (where my grandfather come from) from the 30s into the 80s
- Many stamps from the USSR
- Stamps from South America
- Stamps from Asia

Hello. I'm afraid from your description that there's unlikely to be much value here. Modern Eastern European stamps are a hard sell. Most Yemeni stamps are worth very little, and some are not even legitimate issues. Perhaps upload some photos of the German stamps - people here will be able to tell you if there are any better ones.

If you have Asian stamps from the 80's, you might look for a red one with a monkey picture issued by China. The year of the money stamp could be worth something significant. Many collectors are more willing to pay a dollar to buy one stamp to complete their collection, and less willing to pay $100 for an entire book of eclectic stamps. So even though it's more work, you might get much more for the collection by selling each stamp or each set separately. Are your stamps mostly mint condition with the glue fully in tact or mostly cancelled or hinged stamps? Mint stamps typically are worth more these days.

Images are the only way to provide info and coaching for your stamps.

As shermae posted, little can be said without some images. Even if you have stamps that do not fall into the categories mentioned by GeoffHa, condition is important. A damaged stamp with high catalogue value (price) may have very little value.

Many of the NAZI-Germany stamps have hardly any value, but there are some jewels among them.

alexk86,

What a wonderful family treasure. Please consider keeping it intact for you and future generations to enjoy.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Wishing you many enjoyable future days in our hobby. Russ
