I'm not the world's biggest fan of 1950s music, but Elvis's earliest recordings are great, as is the '68 comeback special.

I happen to be looking through a 2024 Scott, and it shows $0.60 per stamp. I have a few of these as well. Nice stamp but the US issued a strip of 7 different singers (including Elvis) about 6 months later that same year, which I didn't buy. But Scott places a slightly higher value on that strip today ($5.50). I suspect most people bought tons of the earlier Elvis stamp due to the huge fan base here. Then ignored the later issue with other, somewhat less famous singers.

Sheets of 35 stamps (5*7), and booklet panes of 4 and 8. Lots of R&R music then..
A pane of 4 contained Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, Dinah Washington and Elvis Presley.
A pane of 8 contained Elvis, Bill Haley, Clyde McPhatter, Richie Valens, Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, Dinah Washington and aanother Elvis.
The 1993 year sets contained a booklet pane of 7 - a pane of 8 with the bottom Elvis stamp pulled. (Very few sets contained plate 11111 panes which are rare).

One stamp @ $ 0.60 (= roundup 2 x face value to the nearest dime) means the strip of seven stamps @ $ 5.50 commands a very minimal mark-up of $ 0.10 for an intact se-tenant strip of seven stamps.

The catalogue prices for these modern stamps, normally, do not reflect relative demand. They generally are x times face value plus a slight mark-up for intact se-tenant formats. When there is a modern stamp that is catalogued at 20 or 30 times face value, there may be some shortage in supply.

It'll be interesting to know exactly how these catalogs value each item. When a single US 1-cent stamp that was very common back in the 90's is valued at $0.25 is that because it's an awesome collectible?

Not necessarily. Ignoring all philatelic factors, it would depend on when the stamp was issued. The value of a 1 cent stamp issued in 1990 would have a face value of 2 cents in today's dollars. A 1 cent stamp issued in 1940 would have a face value of 22 cents in today's dollars.

Most catalogues will use a minimum value. This does not reflect a value but rather a minimum cost for holding a stamp in stock.

A catalogue like that issued by Stanley Gibbons is a price list. Any stamp priced at £ 1 or less - usually less than £ 1 reflect a lacl of updates - should be considered to have no or 'minimal' value.

Catalogues like Scott that claim to provide 'market' values (usually markets discount from those prices), often use minimum value that does not reflect market value.

Thanks for the response! Sorry for my lack of follow up. I need to tick the subscribe checkbox. As I go through my old stamps and read the catalogs more, I'm starting to see some patterns in how Scott values many US stamps. $0.25 is just a floor. Basically means the stamp has no value.
