Hi Folks,

I would like to ask for your expertise on this recent ebay auction of a set of 1963 China stamps - Pandas - set of 3. Scott #708-710 and imperforate too! According to the 2024 guide, CV is $400 for an unused set (and $150 for the normal perforated type). This ebay auction however starts at a suspiciously low price of $1 USD (5 bids so far, up to $6.50 USD). Could this be real or a fake?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256412545615
(Item number 256412545615)

The seller only has 835 reviews. Is that maybe a bad sign? Seller also sounds a little rude in the description. Maybe that's a good sign :D

Thanks in advance to all the seasoned experts here!

The main reason I don't collect China philately: too many fakes, forgeries, and imitations. That includes through ebay. I buy a lot through that site, but I don't touch China. Besides, what's that saying about things seeming to be too good to be true?

Yep! I know what you mean. I've been mainly busy sorting out the old albums that I collected in my childhood and stuff my parents saved for me. Occasionally I'll do some casual scrolling through eBay/HipStamp/etc., but usually it's in-one-eye-out-the-other :D Especially when the prices seem too good to be true. But today, these ugly pandas really got me. These are the first set of stamps China issued depicting the panda, and they are the most ugly drawings ever. So naturally worth a high catalog value :D Anyway, thanks for chiming in!

By the way, I forgot to add. Whenever I do get more serious about buying more, I think I would feel comfortable buying from the members here, at my local stamp club, or from the China Stamp Society. I have not found other online sources that feel trustworthy.

And the seller is in China, Macau actually. Macau would tend to be less likely a place for forgeries to come from vs. mainland China.

Based on the items the seller is offering, it's hard to say they are selling things nefariously. If you can get it cheap, perhaps "why not" and see if you can get the items validated. My best guess is that the seller is not engaged in an organized scheme, HOWEVER if the stamps are forgeries the seller likely doesn't know. Just a guess.

Just compare it with the other samples on ebay (the $500 ones).
You'll quickly see you will get a home made ink jet printed version (Just look at the outline of the "blue" Panda and the blotch that is supposed to be the furr).
