Scanner Color Variations

I know that the SCF has multiple posts concerning the inability to determine the exact color of a stamp because of the variations in the scanner. But I thought that I would provide an example.

The two (2) following scans are of the same Canadian perfin stamp, using the same PC software and settings but different scanners (Canon and HP).




This is Scott #287, which in one scan looks more orange (Scott 306) than its true red.

It takes a while to play with the scanner settings to get them close to what you see with the naked eye, but even them some colors just throw then off.

I had to upgrade the scanning software for my epson when I updated my Mac OS and it changed the colors as well. I've had a heck of time getting it back to something I think looks correct.

Don always had input on these discussions of color. I keep expecting to see him respond.

If you are using Epson Scan, I have found it inconsistent but do like it for auto fixing faded photos. I use Vuescan for stamps.

Has anyone gone through the process to calibrate the color on their scanner using Vuescan?
