Scott lists several of the "purple" stamps in the 1935-36 time period with two shades, and with no difference in value.
Scott has made some editorial changes over the years. For fun just now, I pulled the 1978 Specialized catalog off the shelf and see that for 772 (Connecticut), Scott used to list the rose violet shade as 772a. The shade is still listed, but the "a" desgnation has disappeared. Scott 774 (Boulder Dam) lists a "deep purple", but without any sub-letter. And lastly, 784 (Susan B. Anthony) lists only the dark violet, which did not get the second shade listing until 2007, 2008, or 2009.
(Based on this thread and the one on the 5 cent Monroe Prexie, I would recommend that you acquire a copy of Scott's Specialized catalog. One should be able to find a used copy 4-6 years old at a reasonable price. Mine is a 2020, which works fine for me and cost $30. It will prove to be an excellent investment.)
