Well, I can give you one for Antarctica (common abbreviations are in parenthesis) --

Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT)
British Antarctic Territory (BAT)
French Southern and Antarctic Territories (FSAT)
Ross Dependency (thanks for reminding me, 22crows!)

Knowing me, I'm sure I left out a couple...

Obviously, they aren't really countries. It's basically their research stations. All are still issuing stamps. I believe the AAT stamps are valid for postage in Australia, no?

Thanks, Rod, for that excellent breakdown! I didn't know about the Cocos Islands and Christmas Island being valid for postage in Australia!

For Antarctica you can add Ross Dependency - still issuing stamps.

And for Australia, of course, we mustn't forget the pre-Federation State issues:
New South Wales,
Queensland
South Australia
Tasmania
Victoria
Western Australia (no matter how much rod222 might wish it otherwise)

I've thought about it Tony,
best to leave things as they are, if we secede we get the
boss living locally, what a pain!
Best to have the Polly Wallies left as far East as we can have them.

Luis, I think you are going about it the wrong way, Philately was
never meant to be organised, although we spend half our lives trying.

Why not collect whatever comes your way, and see what
countries or topicals blow your hair back.
You have plenty of time, you can sell later what you don't want, and you can get started on something that will give you enjoyment for a long time, no need to force it.
If you have any hobbies or passtimes, try to match them to philately.

If you collected "Oceania" some issues would be :
Oceania :

Niue
Cook Islands
Gilbert and Ellice Islands
Tonga
Samoa
Christmas Island
Tokelau
Toga
Cocos Keeling Island
Aitutaki
Penrhyn (North Cook Is)
Tuvalu
Pitcairn Island
Nauru
Norfolk Island

Im just overwelmed wiht how many countries and previously free states and colonies have
issued stamps ahah
But im sticking with this topic, but like you say, ill just collect countries
as I find, thats what I have been doing, and honestly, its less frustrating
than having all this big list and trying to find them all :P
Ill just start slow and steady, and like I said, keep on collecting countries,
becuase that is what I really like, having parts of the world at my hands,
but ill just take it slower.
Thanks all for the list anyways, ill have to type it up and print it as a reference.

Yes, I think it is more fun to get stamps and make a list of countries you have, rather than get a list countries and get stamps based on that list. There is a certain joy in getting a stamp and finding out about a country you never knew existed. Just my opinion.

At least a few more Antarcticas (or arguably so)...

Falkland Island Dependencies
South Georgia
Victoria Land (overprinted on NZ)
King Edward VII Land (o/p on NZ)

The first two hold better claims under this topic than the last two, but an argument can certainly be made for the last two.

I think you are on the right track to just get as many stamps that come your way as you can inside your own limits of time, space and money, and then see what floats to the surface.

C.
