Among my George V stamps from the 1912-24 issue, I found this specimen that I classify as SG#375. The fact is that the cancellation date is 14/10/1911, almost a year before the issue date that appears in the Stanley Gibson catalog, which dates the first issue to 9/10/1912. Could it be a mistake by the post office?

Are you very sure the "11" indicates the year ?

I'm not 100% sure, but it is usually the position of the last 2 figures of the year...

Searching the web I found this copy with 23 and 11, and from the year 1923 I don't think it is...

You're showing two entirely different cancellation types - you can't read across from one to the other.

The 11 is most likely the carrier number, or office number

The first postmark shown by Murasama is a London Newspaper Branch marking, with a pattern of dashes around the edge.

Many of them have the date in the form DD MM YY in one line, with a letter or number underneath, so the year is somewhere in the 1920s for this one. The number underneath probably just identifies the particular cancelling device.

The second postmark is a different type, in which the date is expressed in two lines: MM DD above YY, so 23 December 1911.
