NO, never. You do seem to find 100% of the rarities. That must be a sign something is amiss with the identification.

This is a very clear plate 17?. There is a good probability it is a 177, but the cancellation makes it difficult to be certain about the third digit.

The bottom of the image shows 177, upside down. Not really debatable.

Agree. 177 is clearly visible on the bottom.
