I was opening a bunch of new BK170 booklets, and found this - a twenty stamp booklet with thirty stamps, three panes instead of two. I don't think I've ever seen a booklet with an extra pane in it...

Very interesting. Might have something there.

That is pretty neat. Definitely something to keep. I'm sure that members on this group will now be carefully checking their inventory for the same. Another reason the USPO is losing so much money ...

Three pane booklets of BK170 had been reported when it was issued. My guess is it is plate 111111 panes in your case as it is in the reported cases.
There are other issues which also have one too many or one too few panes inside.

No idea. The problem with such items is always:
How easy (or difficult) is it to "make them" (add a pane or remove a pane) without leaving suspicious traces behind? The higher something trades, the higher the incentive for "creative" people to "find them"...

As far as I remember, I paid less than triple face value for my two-pane $4.40 Flag and Fireworks booklet, or my one pane $5 Jack London booklet. (Booklets with pane(s) missing are not that spectacular as the Goebel booklet forming machine occasionally "forgot" to add water when glueing the panes into the covers.)

I actually can't remember having seen such an item on ebay or at an auction in the past years. You can try an auction house but somehow I doubt the bigger ones are interested.

I have encountered 2 pane booklets with the top pane there but not glued in. Don't recall which ones.
